With so many new people at the gym this time of year and many people that just have no gym etiquette, I thought it would be a good time to talk about how to act in the gym. Let me jump right into it.
You are there to workout, so workout. Don’t show up to walk around, eating food, drinking your coffee and sitting on equipment, and walking on a .6 on the treadmill. You are taking up space and machines for people that want to use it and improve their life. If you go to the gym, then use it.
Be courteous. Pretty much everything could fall under this category, but I’ll break it down just a bit, don’t cuss, don’t be overly loud, and if somebody needs help, help. J
Clean up your mess. Wipe down your equipment if necessary. Just today I saw a guy drenched in sweat that wasn’t wiping off equipment. He was just leaving it there for the next person to deal with. So, clean up your stuff. Also be sure to put your weights away. Don’t leave your weight plates on the barbell cuz you are lazy, or showing off. If somebody else wants to use it and they aren’t strong enough to remove the weights, you just prevented that person from getting in their workout. Finally, if you are using dumbbells or other equipment in a different part of the gym, please go put it back. There’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to find the other dumbbell that you need, only to find out as you are leaving that the dumbbell was over by the leg press machine.
Share Equipment. Just because you were there first doesn’t mean that that piece of equipment is yours. Let somebody else work in if they ask. They have every right to it that you do.
Curls in Squat Rack. There are lots of places to do curls in the gym, but not a lot of places to do squats. If you need to do curls, find somewhere else to do them.
Don’t use five stations at once. I understand some people do circuit training or supersets, and I will as well, however if possible, don’t monopolize multiple pieces of equipment. It makes it much more difficult for somebody else to get their workout in.
Don’t talk on the phone. Not only is it annoying but, but, well it’s annoying more than anything else. If you must talk on your phone, step off the weight room floor so other people can get their workout in.
So what do you find most annoying in the gym? I’m a bit annoyed by seeing people not do exercises the right way, such as doing squats and not even going down a quarter of the way. But I shouldn’t be, lol. I don’t need to worry about what other people are doing, I just need to worry about me and my progress.
