How To Overcome Cravings
Let’s face the facts. Everyone will have cravings at one time or another. What most people do when they have cravings is give into them. So what happens? Weight gain, fat gain, health deteriorates, and they are ultimately unhappy with their body, many times resulting in depression.
The theory goes that people that eat a lot of high glycemic foods don’t make us very full, and as a result we eat more. Foods high in fats, sugar, or sodium often trigger a chemical in the brain called dopamine, and causes our body to crave more of these foods. (Late night potato chips anyone?). Others say that if you don’t eat enough protein you’ll have cravings. Finally, you could just be hungry especially if you are very active.
Here’s a few ways you can keep your hunger cravings under control.
Instead of reaching for food that will cause you to want more junk food (chips, cookies, candy, etc) reach for some carrots, oranges, or one of my personal favorites, frozen grapes. These type of foods can put a little something in your stomach causing your cravings to disappear.
If you are really craving sweet, chew some gum. That can often help with sweet tooth cravings. If I need gum, I’ll go for the fruity sugar free variety.
Schedule A Cheat Meal
Knowing that in a week or whatever it is you’ll be able to have whatever food you want can help immensely. Don’t eat that junk now, but in one week you can. This may be just what you need to push that craving away.
Give Yourself A Timeframe
Say to yourself, if I really want this in an hour, then I’ll have it. Chances are an hour will pass and you won’t want it anymore, the craving will have passed.
Cravings often happen when you are laying around doing nothing in particular. Keep yourself busy, this will keep your mind off of food.
Many times, you just need something in your mouth. Water is great for you. I prefer ice water. Put some lemon in it, maybe a little stevia, and make yourself your own homemade lemonade.
Remember what you truly want. You will never reach your goals in life if you are giving into temptation and going for the easy, quick fix. Remember what is important.
Don’t get down on yourself if you have cravings and give into them. If you give into them, don’t beat yourself up. Vow that you will do better next time.
