So you want to lose weight, huh? This time of year especially it is the hot topic. The media is constantly feeding us stories about how more than half of adults are overweight. There’s books and other fitness and weight loss products being pushed in newspaper ads, online and on late night TV. If you are trying to lose weight, here are a few tips for you.
Tip #1 – Stop Talking and Start Doing!
Talking about it isn’t going to do anything. I suppose if you flap your gums enough you might burn a calorie or two. Simply put, you need to get moving. Get a program and start working out. Look at it this way, in a month you can be leaner or fatter or the same, either way, the month will go by. What do you want?
Tip #2 – No Quick Fixes
I know it doesn’t sell as much. And it isn’t as cool, but slow and steady weight loss wins the race. Fad diets that promise high weight loss suck for a couple reasons. 1) They aren’t sustainable, and usually result in roller coaster weight loss and yo yo dieting. 2) You are losing a lot of weight because its muscle too! You don’t want to lose muscle, just fat!!! So shoot for 1-3lbs of fat loss per week. How are you going to lose weight? My recommendation is to determine how many calories you need for fat loss, and begin exercising. So, good old diet and exercise.
Tip #3 – Save Your Money
You know the fat loss pills, weight loss pills, and other supplements that claim to help you lose weight? Please don’t waste your money. I would have no problem recommending them if they did in fact work. But the truth is they don’t. And if they do, the amount that they actually help is so miniscule that you wouldn’t even be able to tell. All they will do is help you lose money, not fat. There is no shortcut to fat loss.
Tip #4 – Make it a Way of Life
Unfortunately, many people struggle with weight for their whole life. The biggest contributors to this are the ease of getting food these days, and the low activity level. In other words, too many calories coming in and not enough going out. If you really do want to change and lose the weight for good, you need to think about the long term, not just the weight you want to lose now. Think long term, where you want to be in five years. Make a commitment to change your life for the better. Successful weight loss and a successful body transformation involves changes how you act internally and your relationship with food.
Tip #5 – Weight Loss isn’t Just a Numbers Game
Don’t become a slave to the scale. Yes the scale is one indicator of how you are doing, but it is only one. And it is the one that is most likely to mess with you. Say you had a week where you lost a lb. of fat and gained a lb. of muscle and you were retaining water. Well, the scale could say that you gained a lb., and you would become frustrated, when in actuality you had a great week. So my recommendation is to take pictures, and measure your waist as well.
If you’ve made the commitment this New Year to lose weight and get in better shape, then do it! You can do it. You will be much happier and more confident. Trust me, I’ve been there before. I know it can be a challenge, but it is oh so worth it.
